Hotfile Ordered To Share User Data With The MPAA
The following mainly applies only to users from America, but it may lead to Hotfile’s demise internationally.

A quote from that article:
“In their ongoing battle with the MPAA, the Florida-based file-hosting service Hotfile has suffered a major loss. A federal court has ordered Hotfile to disclose user data, the identities and revenues of their top affiliates, and financial information on the company itself. District Court Judge Adalberto Jordan argued that the MPAA needs this info to prove that Hotfile is promoting and profiting from copyright infringement.”
I would advise you guys to read the whole article. Very sad and disturbing news. From here on out, I will not use Hotfile in any of my posts. Granted this is the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), but still.

What about remaining links are you going to remove them?
Remaining links will probably stay until Hotfile deletes them. The other uploaders will still upload if they want to, I am just the only one currently in the US that uploads.
Oh yea, you’re right. Lol forgot HF was located in US, such noobs.
totally replied to the wrong comment… I think you understand what I meant to do though. :S
Actually, so does MU. Read their privacy policy
“Certain Exceptional Disclosures
We may disclose your information if necessary to protect our legal rights or if…..blahblah…”
In other words, in order to save their own ass, they’ll happily give anyone who threatens them your personal info.
If a court orders them, they have to. IF they are in the country the court is, they have to follow the local law.
Megaupload, from what I can tell, is hosted in China.
I think the bottom line is to be careful of any services with physical facilities located in the US. I didn’t know Hotfile was. I wonder if any other of the dl services are?
Best place to locate servers? Horrible Subs servers have a French address, and he seems fairly careful/paranoid. Indonesia perhaps?
MPAA especially might represent theatrically released anime movies, but could be approached to be an agent for other companies I guess.
Given the situation, why would any dl service create/retain records of the ip addresses of those who use it?
